Working The Refs

The machinations that take place inside of a big company aren’t part of my knowledge base. Thank goodness.

When I accidentally read about companies seeking legislative relief, tax breaks, incentives, or other benefits I quickly move on to something else.

Rules and laws are supposed to apply to everyone but there’s quite a bit of behind the scenes action to get more favorable treatment. I’m not naive so I know how and why this happens. Luckily I can steer clear. One of my favorite writers, Bob Lefsetz, talks about this topic often and refers to this influence game as “working the refs.”

Sports metaphors are usually lost on me but this one is easy to decipher.

I’m happy to report that all of the referees I know are resistant to being worked. That includes this fellow in California who is great at his job and even better at being photographed.
