Wild West End

It’s a place and a song, and the song is about this place.

I’m talking about Wild West End by Dire Straits.

I heard the track yesterday when I was on a walk. Even though I was 4000 miles away from this famous London neighborhood, my mind went right back to Shaftsbury Avenue where I have done many street sessions.

I saw you walking out Shaftesbury Avenue

Excuse me for talking I wanna marry you

This is the seventh heaven street to me

Don’t you seem so proud

You’re just another angel

In the crowd and I’m…

Walking in the wild west end

Walking with your wild best friend

This one took place on Shaftsbury Avenue adjacent to the Palace Theatre. I came to know the neighborhood quite well by renting a flat there for a week a few years ago.

Mark Knopfler’s lyrics really paint a picture of the neighborhood. I’ve used my camera to try to do the same.
