When Time is Abundant

There are two nonstop destinations from the Kirkwood, Missouri Amtrak station. Eastbound is Union Station in downtown St. Louis. Westbound is Washington, Missouri.

Depending on whom you ask, those two places are either somewhere or nowhere. My thinking that either place is worthy of a trip.

Even in the best of times, ridership on the train in Missouri is minimal. The River Runner line connects Kansas City to St. Louis. But so do Southwest Airlines and Interstate 70, both in a more convenient fashion.

When time is abundant, it’s possible to leave Kirkwood and ride all the way to Los Angeles or Boston. It’s not cheap and any vestige of glamour has been wrung out of the system.

It’s still a different way to see things you won’t with “normal” travel. I can say that my Amtrak sojourns were never boring. Even my roundtrip from Kirkwood to Washington, Missouri a few years ago was worth the effort.
