Last week I was walking in New Orleans from Lafayette Square up to the French Quarter and around Treme.
This week I was on foot in downtown Portland along a street named Salmon then through and around the Pearl District.
Both cities offer great food and an interesting cross-section of natives and visitors.
Visitors stand out in both places. In New Orleans, those who are indulging can be spotted from a distance. Non-natives in Portland are obvious, not for their dress, but lack of preparation for the frequent cloud bursts.
Both cities have streetcars, street food, and street entertainment.
There’s no shortage of humor in either place.
