It’s interesting how certain iconic things, both big and small, can be identified from a great distance.

Those things can spark an instant emotional response.

In the case of a VW Microbus, the positive feelings span multiple generations. Nearly everyone I know has a story about these machines.

Even those that haven’t experienced this kind of van have aspirations to do so.

This photograph is not about the van. I try very hard not to create portraits where a non-human element can influence the perception of the subject.

In this case, they’re both remarkable artifacts of a certain place and time.
