Tree Hugger

A rustic Grenada, Mississippi studio is where Robin Whitfield’s work is assembled. But first, the artist makes her own materials.

The dyes, inks and powders that are part of Robin’s paintings originate from the flora of a cyprus swamp just a few minutes away.

That very wild place is part of a nature preserve. As you might imagine, she is fiercely protective of the land. In her role as appointed conservator for the preserve, Robin’s stewardship means others can enjoy the place as much as she does.

I photographed her in the studio and in the swamp, because you can’t have one without the other.
