Almost ten years ago I was lucky enough to be in Orlando for a soccer tournament that had a bunch of small boys playing on a big field.
During the final game as the clock was running down, I could hear one boy admonish his teammates by saying, “this is no time for showboating!”
That boy was my nephew. Not only did that saying become part of our jokingly oft-repeated family lore, it also became a precursor of how he’d develop from a boy to a young man.
Even today, this kid is still modest enough to forego showboating. That doesn’t mean that I have to.
Having just watched him graduate from high school this evening I think it’s worth noting a few things he’s recently accomplished.
Summa Cum Laude graduate, Illinois State Scholar, Illinois All-State soccer team, Optimist Club scholar, National honor society officer just to name a few. Even the local Presbyterian church gave this Catholic kid a scholarship.
Earlier this year he earned a university scholarship to play division one soccer at Niagara University.
This kid is the whole package and every member of the family couldn’t be more proud.
Here’s to Stephen, the best nephew a guy could have.
