Theory vs Practice

“Anyone could have done that.”

That was the portfolio critique that I received from a former mentor when he visited my first studio in the early 90s. We had not seen each other in years.

It was a little shocking to hear, but by then I was inoculated against opinions that had no basis in truth.

My response was swift. I said, “maybe anyone could have done it, but it was only me that actually did the work.”

That was that.

I was reminded of that moment yesterday when photographing a painter in Panama City, Florida.

Only a few choose to do it to completion. The ones that do are very special.
