To the fans of stage entertainment, the theater is the destination.

The bright lights of the towering marquee draw people in like moths to a flame. But to the insider, the place to be is backstage. The way to get there is through the stage door.

In the theater district of any city, the alleys and sidestreets provide compelling locations for portraits. However, this is conditional on one thing. The subject needs to have theatre DNA.

This winter portrait with a New York actor didn’t rev up until we were at the stage door. Once it did, the performance was memorable.
