Spelling Words

I before E, except after C. This goofy mnemonic sums up the absurdity of the English language.

A little rhyme for not much reason.

My student days were challenging enough without the added stress of spelling. There was a degree of zealousness at my schools related to attaining 100% accuracy combined with perfect penmanship. My initial attraction to photography had a lot to do with escaping the rules of the day.

Little did I know that my dream of a future without typos would become a reality thanks to spell-checking.

I still have countless ways to make mistakes when writing. Luckily I know someone kind enough to find my errors. While dining out with this copy editor in London, I noticed the sign of a stationery store with a memorable name.

It was a poetic moment.
