Sisyphus’s Critic

Someone was telling me about a “critic in training” that they know. Funny how that alleged occupation can get my attention. Before I could hear more, I said that artists see critics the way vegans see slaughterhouses.

Creating art is labor. Critiquing the finished result isn’t.

Until someone has pushed their own rock up a hill, I don’t want to hear feedback on the way I push mine.

To every critic, I say, “what are you waiting for? That rock isn’t going to push itself.”
