One of my favorite books of all time is Paddle Your Own Canoe by Nick Offerman. Part of the appeal is the title. It sums up how I try to live my life as an artist. That means not waiting to be picked or hoping to be told what to do.

Nick and I appear to share a lot of sensibilities. Maybe that comes from our respective Illinois starting points. We both relish our hired gigs but we also have other creative pursuits that keep a balance between the highs and lows. He has woodworking and I have writing.

I didn’t have a chance to discuss this topic with this body-boarder in Hawaii. Something tells me that a man who relies on self-propulsion is probably a lot like me and Nick.

About the author: I am Stephen Kennedy, an experienced photographer with more than 2500 completed sessions in all 50 US states.
