Road to the White House

This photograph from 2014 shows my daughters and niece standing in front of The White House. We had just completed an official tour and we were lingering because the experience was so powerful. None of us wanted it to end.

A lot has changed for all three of these young women. They’ve traveled far and wide, at home and abroad. Each of them have chosen interesting and challenging career paths.

One of them, my niece, returns to this very spot every day, as a member of the professional staff working in The White House.

She didn’t get there by accident. After two congressional internships and a recently-completed White House internship, some wise people recognized her abilities and commitment and made it possible for her to work for the American people.

When I look back at this picture I had no idea that things would turn out this way.

I can also say that I’m not surprised.
