Riders on the Storm

Salmon, Idaho might be the most bucolic place on the continent in early September. But even a cursory look around will tell you that nature can be a savage to human life here.

The mild river that bisects the town has high banks with logs set in places that only a raging torrent could have left.

Beyond that stream, there’s little evidence of surface water that doesn’t come from a pipe.

Even in the morning, the wind is fierce.

I was bunked in comfort and spendor just outside of the settlement.

However, the name of the road makes it clear what can happen outside of tourist season.
