Retained Earnings

It’s pretty easy to rate the effectiveness of a wall. Either it’s standing, or it’s not. Even when there’s a slight lean, the original objective is in place.

I accidentally fell into some yard work recently. The task involved removing some tree debris after a storm. It had collected near a retaining wall on the side of my house.

Back in 2000, I paid some strong men to build the wall. The purpose was to prevent a water incursion into my basement. To their credit, it’s never failed.

The wall has even blended into the surroundings in a way that makes it almost invisible. The moss and lichens that have grown on it have given it a look that only time can accomplish.

This giant stone wall in Alameda, California isn’t just a great background. There are practical aspects of dividing the busy and sedate. This wall does it well, earning the folks on the quiet side lots of tranquility.
