Usually, the first thing that I say to a subject when I start a session is, “what do you do when you’re not getting your picture taken?”
The answers are typically predictable and rarely surprise me.
I’ve asked this questions of CEOs and workers on the factory floor. It’s a great ice-breaker and loosens the subject up as much as possible in the shortest amount of time.
When I photographed Adam in Palm Springs, his response was, “I’m a mariachi!”
That was a welcome surprise.
After hearing that I was about to photograph my first mariachi, I ended up being the one loosened up. As we worked I found out more and more about Adam.
He’s an actor of course. And his professional music career has taken him far and wide thanks to his classical training and diverse performance repertoire. He’s also a music teacher and a father with four kids.
As a subject, he’s the real deal.
That’s the true definition of a Renaissance man.
