Montana Girl Boss

The first rodeo I attended was in Wyoming at the Cody Stampede.

It’s a bit like learning about how football is played by watching your first game at the Superbowl.

The bull riding is unreal in that you can’t believe that someone can survive for even a second or two, let alone eight. It’s raw and rough to the point of insanity.

The more technical rodeo events were the ones that I enjoyed the most, especially women’s barrel racing. I was astounded at how the horse and rider worked together.

I kept asking myself, “how can this look so effortless?” The answer is years of practice and an early start.

A city dweller can be forgiven a sense of disbelief when seeing a young girl with a full-grown horse under her control. Even today when I look at this photo from our session in Montana, I can hardly believe it.
