Memory Focus

Are you photographing the sunset? That’s what the person next to me asked.

I answered that I was photographing the town below. His reply was one of consternation and asked how I could interpret what I was seeing.

It all seemed obvious to me.

-A confluence of two major rivers.

-The bridge that links two states that couldn’t be any different.

-A massive dam built in the late 70s that I watched being built from my high school up the hill.

-Storage tanks at the refineries where my grandfathers worked.

-Countless familiar buildings and roads.

My camera was a little soft on the details, but my memory of my hometown of Alton, Illinois brought it into focus.
