Liz Phair’s Street Portrait

This is my favorite frame from an editorial shoot with indie musician Liz Phair from way back.

The shoot was supposed to take place in a Chicago studio but some unseasonably nice weather intervened. We took the session outside to a desolate area just west of River North. Truth be told, I was thrilled to be unshackled from the studio. The street offers freedom and possibilities that never seem to be available to me when there are four walls and a ceiling.

Some unexpected street art and a few wild flowers growing through the sidewalk cracks helped transform our rugged spot into a superb set.
