Even though I’m a gear minimalist, I find it prudent to have my lighting kit at hand.
By comparison to my peers, it’s a trivial amount of equipment. I carry just two light stands, two flashes, AA batteries, an umbrella, and one plastic light modifier designed by Gary Fong.
I haven’t booked a session in years that required more lighting horsepower than my standard setup.
Despite having these effective tools at my disposal, I always look for the natural light option first. Typically I end up with a combination of available and supplemental light.
If I get lucky, the daylight served up by nature will be better than anything I can concoct. That’s exactly what happened with this portrait from Emeryville, California.
Those free streaks of light added another element to a photograph that was already a winner.
