Lean Into

The most casual standing pose that I can direct a subject to do is a simple lean. Even if the desired result is more formal, the effect on the person is significant.

Someone who might feel ill at ease in front of the camera can’t help but relax during a lean.

I’ve tried to figure out why this is such an effective approach.

In my rigid school days under the hawk eyes of Catholic nuns, leaning or slouching was a punishable offense. I’m probably not the only one who was raised this way. Maybe to an adult, this comfortable stance is like eating dessert before the meal.

This session in Encinitas, California was absent of any formality. It was just the kind of thing I love to lean into whenever I can.
