Larger Than Life

I assumed you were older.

I visualized you as taller.

I thought you were Black.

There are things that I’ve heard from people over the years who thought they knew me based on seeing my work.

Of course, this is absurd. However, I’m not immune from thinking this way.

When I first saw the work Carrie Disrud-Joris, I imagined her as larger than life. I got it half right.

It all became clear when I stepped into her Key West studio earlier this year.

Her spirit is giant, housed in the most petite physical container. As great as it was to see her artwork, it was even better to observe the artist and the results together.
