If They Can, They Will

Neal Preston is a legend in the strange business of concert photography.

For Christmas, I received his 2017 book called Exhilarated and Exhausted.

In my formative years as a photojournalist, I photographed some concerts, though not in a quantity that comes close to Neal. I shot dozens and he’s shot thousands.

They were all great learning experiences. The biggest lesson that I learned was that I didn’t have the grit to do that kind of work for a living.

Every photographer that I know has plenty of stories of overcoming adversity. The most interesting often pertain to business. It’s always an unfair fight when it’s the artist against a company.

This passage really struck a nerve. Neal said, “if they can bone you, they will bone you.” I knew exactly what he meant. With a little experience it’s possible to keep it from happening.

This anecdote is really just a footnote. Like all of us, we’ve had some raw deals but the love of the game keeps us coming back for more.

About the author: I am Stephen Kennedy, an experienced photographer with more than 2500 completed sessions in all 50 US states.
