High Water Mark
There are two kinds of basements. Ones that leak and ones that haven’t leaked yet.
I know this from experience.
Growing up next to the Mississippi River, I also know that a flood is just around the corner. It’s a certainty.
Man vs nature is never a fair fight. But the battles continue.
To me, owning or leasing a property on a floodplain is insanity. Yet there is no shortage of takers.
Seventy years ago in Manhattan, Kansas the downtown was covered in water from two overflowing rivers. Or so says the placard that’s higher than my head.
At this moment, hope has triumphed over experience. Flood insurance and a high levy make that possible. For now, Manhattan might be the nicest college town I’ve ever seen. But I wouldn’t bet against nature.
