A few years ago, this subject in the denim shirt and I met for a brief photography session in Burlingame, California. That’s my primary go-to spot any time I’m near SFO. Sometimes it’s a destination unto itself.
This session wasn’t my first or even my tenth in that great small city. I didn’t go there with any preconceived notions, but an abiding feeling that something great would happen when the camera was in use.
It wasn’t anyone’s idea for me to do this session. In fact, I was footing all the costs including travel, lodging, meals, and a talent fee. My hope was that at some point in the future I’d recoup my costs. Anything beyond that was icing on the cake.
The following year I was contacted by a marketing firm in Raleigh. They had made their way to my stock photography site and found something that suited their needs perfectly.
The person who bought the picture after the fact said to me, “you knew exactly what we wanted before we knew what we wanted.”
I’m not clairvoyant, nor am I a Philip K. Dick precog but I have been able to repeatedly create something that fits the bill for people before, not after, it’s needed.
