Limiting one’s creative choices can have the paradoxical effect of enhancing the finished result. By establishing certain limits, an artist can concentrate just on the areas that count instead of floundering around.
In short, more isn’t better. What’s better is making the most of the key ingredients. This is the hallmark of French cuisine; reduce, reduce, reduce.
In this session near downtown Nashville, I intentionally limited myself to just one camera and one lens. People who are familiar with my work know that this is my standard operating procedure.
But in an attempt to stimulate a different outcome, I deviated from my normal 50mm focal length. This session with a fine young man was captured with an 85mm lens.
