Big Box Half Step

There was a time when I enjoyed making a trek to a big box home center. Those trips were fueled by aspirations of future enhancements to my fixer-upper home.

Now that all of my improvements have lived long enough to have been improved again, my enthusiasm for this kind of outing has long passed.

Today turned out to be the day that I couldn’t ignore a plumbing issue any longer so I made my way to the closest depot. Before I left, I checked their online inventory and saw that they had the two faucet cartridges that I needed.

The store reality differed from the online promise.

While they nominally had both parts, only one item could be found on the shelf. The man working there said that he was sure that it was in the store somewhere. He said it with the kind of certainty typically reserved for oracles or wizards.

I’m looking on the bright side. Having only half the parts meant that I could only do half the job which was more than enough for an August summer afternoon.

Experiences like this are always a great reminder for me that in my business I need to make sure that I deliver what I promise.

It only took a few minutes after this disappointment to discover that Amazon has an incredible selection of plumbing parts. The one I needed will be delivered to my front door by the time you read this post. Even better, I didn’t have to open a drawer, walk an aisle or talk to an “expert” to make that happen.

It’s a pity that I had to start at the beginning and not at the end.
