Ambiguous Mix

Imagine having a recipe with two ingredients but with no guidance or explanation of how to measure or mix the components.

That’s exactly how a portrait is made.

Here’s what you need:

-one subject

-one background

Here are the directions:

-combine both ingredients in proportion to what will result in a favorable outcome.

This guidance is perfectly reasonable for a true artist. Not surprisingly, it would be infuriating to someone who wants to get a good grade on the test.

Like anything else, the doing gets easier with practice.
