Aerial Recon

I bet you already know this place, even if you’re never set foot on the island.

There’s no need to send it out for expert analysis. A moderately familiar eye can see Waikiki and Diamond Head, not to mention the many shades of blue that are the hallmark of this paradise.

After more than five hours with an unchanging view of the Pacific, this jewel emerged. It was my second time being in the arrival sequence at this altitude. The first time was in 2013 but I landed after sunset so I was unable to see the details, though the night view was stellar.

Up until that arrival in 2013, I had done photography sessions in 49 states. On the following day in Honolulu, I logged my 50th.

The return held more significance because I was traveling with my whole family. It was three generations of the Kennedy family together for an incredible Hawaiian immersion.

This photograph was just one of the hundreds that my family and I captured on our adventure. It’s a powerful reminder of how much joy a picture can provide.
