A Linked Chain

Everything about this portrait is unlikely.

First of all, this little gap in the buildings on West 31st St with a shaft of light was pure providence. Second, the subject didn’t know that she was going to be photographed that day.

Her boyfriend was my subject. She had tagged along on our midtown Manhattan street studio adventure. He was fine in front of the camera, but she was much better. He didn’t fit the scene, but when she stepped in, a little magic happened. All I had to do was ask.

Another intangible was the presence of my friend Billy Jim. He’s a New York photographer and former assistant to the great Irving Penn.

This linked chain could never have been planned, which is why I remember it so fondly.
